This video is the fifth video in the series of videos following the progress of the sustainable development, the Anna Maria Historic Green Village, in Florida. The Green Village is for commercial and retail use and shall be powered entirely by renewable green energy such as solar energy and ground source heat pumps. The whole concept of the Green Village is to be zero net energy -- achieving platinum LEED certification.

Lizzie: What we're doing here is we're making an investment. It's a big investment; we get a decent return, but much more than that it's about an inspiration for other people to follow us, to learn from all the learnings, all the mistakes we're making, and to do it better to benefit themselves and to benefit the planet.

Raymond: The thing that's distinctive about Historic Green Village in Anna Maria Island is that Mike and Lizzie have made a financial commitment to really demonstrate what's possible. They designated this as a net zero energy campus. This campus will produce as much or more energy on site as they use in a giving year. During the day the photovoltaic panels will produce an excess of electricity that will go out to support the electricity needs of people up and down Pine Avenue and at night they'll basically use that panel as basically like a big battery. And it's that kind of integration of basically traditional utility with these renewable energy sources that's really what will shepherd us into really creating a sustainable renewable energy economy of our time.

Lizzie: We all have to do our bit because otherwise our children will inherit the problem from all of us. At the moment we just buy energy in and, you know, you use your dollars and it varies in price and you get aggravated or not. But to actually generate energy where you live and see the result as the kind of the energy meter goes round on your kitchen worktop is huge. It just gives you a great sense of responsibility and a great sense of control over what you're doing. I think that's so important that we take back control of our understanding of energy and the way that we use it. Because that disciplines us, that educates us; it makes us much more responsible.
