In today's auction we’ll continue a theme we started recently by highlighting the best seasons in the careers of 5 Hall Of Famers – Fred McGriff. Billy Wagner, Scott Rolen, CC Sabathia and Roy Halladay
In this auction we will take the players from the 1989 Blue Jays, 1999 Astros, 2004 Cardinals, 2008 Brewers and 2010 Phillies - we’ll make all those players free agents, from that player pool we will construct 5 new teams via an auction.
The 1989 Blue Jays won 89 games and finished first in the AL East. The team’s strength was hitting, they ranked 5th in OPS but only 11th in ERA. Fred McGriff was head and shoulders the best hitter on the team, leading the American league with 36 HRs and a .924 OPS.
Our next team is the 1999 Astros. The Astros won 97 games and finished first in the NL Central. This teams represents the best season in the career of Billy Wagner, but the overall pitching for this team was also excellent, finishing 3rd in ERA out of 30 teams. On the hitting side they were driven by another Hall Of Famer, Jeff Bagwell, who delivered one of his best seasons, producing an OPS of 1.045 and leading the league in wins above replacement.
Our 3rd team is the 2004 Cardinals, they were a legitimate dominant team, and the best of this batch of teams, winning 105 games, finishing 3rd in OPS and 2nd in ERA, leading to the best run differential of any team that year. Besides Scott Rolen, this team featured two other players with OPS above 1.000, Hall Of Famer Albert Pujols and near Hall Of Famer Jim Edmonds. In the case of Pujols he was at the beginning of a legendary 10 year stretch in which he would average a 1.051 OPS, with 8 of the seasons being over 1.000.
Our next team is the 2008 Brewers, they won 90 games and finished 2nd in the NL Central. The strength of the team was pitching, finishing 4th in ERA, but only 14th in OPS (CC Sabathia 1.65 vs. 130 innings 3.83). Despite the overall hitting not being dominant, they did receive excellent years from Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder.
Our last teams the 2010 Phillies won 97 games and finished 1st in the NL East. This team was 6th in ERA and 11th in OPS. Besides the Cy Young award winning season from Roy Halladay, they also received excellent seasons from Cole Hamels, Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth.
