PowerShell makes it easy to automate nearly anything, including network device configurations. In this video, we explore how you can use PowerShell to generate a dynamic Bash script, which we'll copy to and execute on an Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X router / firewall device.

The Bash script we'll be generating in this example is going to add an array of IPv4 addresses to a firewall address group. I'll be sourcing the list of IP addresses from a repository on GitHub that's updated daily. I've already configured a firewall rule to block network traffic from this firewall address group separately, so this video simply demonstrates how to add new addresses to the existing block list.

In Ubiquiti EdgeOS, there is a script that you'll need to import ("source") into your Bash script, to enable the router commands like configure, commit, and save. The path to that script should be: source /opt/vyatta/etc/functions/script-template

By automating the blacklisting of untrusted IP addresses, you can improve the security of your home office or business network. This is especially important as you spend more time working from home, and handle sensitive business data on your network.
