Goodbye TUNISIA! 😢 Tunis Medina & the Ferry To Sicily

Day 173. 36km (81112kms 7yrs)

The couple of days I spent with Nedra gave me a great - albeit belated - insight into how it
is to cycle as a Tunisian woman here. It’s not my experience to share so suffice it to say it is very different from my experience as a European woman.

My ferry wasn’t until 03:00 so I had the day to revisit Tunis medina and eat some of my favourite foods all over again. Meeting up with Nedra at Nomadic bike in the evening I got to meet some of the people who’ve been giving me support and guidance over the past 3 months.

But all too soon it was time to make my way around to the port 20kms away. It’s rare that I ride in the dark and although I followed advice and took the ‘safer’ northern route around the lagoon, without a shoulder of any size it was still a hairy experience.

Once on the port-side extremity of Carthage, and with a bit of spare time on my hands I grabbed my last couple of Tunisian beers. Just when it was time to leave, a kind guy sent over another bottle and a small bouquet of flowers of the type folk sell in bars and cafes around here.

So I arrived at the port a couple of beers worse for wear and seeing no sign of check-in I waited in line for immigration, only learning once through that check-in had closed 4 hours before departure! Catastrophe! I was instructed to abandon bike and luggage at the gate and was taken back out through security, but after an excruciating though mercifully short wait, I was allowed back though to board anyway (making the requirement to check in feel a bit redundant..)

Once board I was ready this time to quickly grab a bit of floor space, roll out my sleeping things, and settle in for the overnight trip back to Palermo, Sicily.
