Following my trip to Mathura and Vrindavan, I made my way to Agra, the capital of the Mughals. I visited at two historical sites en route to Agra. I started by visiting the Fatehpur Sikri. A city mostly made of red sandstone, is located 37 kilometers from Agra. Akbar, the Mughal Emperor, founded this town. Although he had intended to make this city his capital, a water shortage forced him to leave the city. Following this, Lahore became the new Mughal capital in less than 20 years. Between 1571 and 1585, Fatehpur Sikri was constructed. There are presently around 30,000 people living in this city. Thanks to the work of the Archaeology Department, many of the historic buildings in this abandoned city have been preserved.One of the best representations of Mughal architectural splendor at its pinnacle is Fatehpur Sikri. Even if the city is in ruins, visitors to Agra should still go there. An 11-kilometer fortification wall with multiple gateways encircles Fatehpur Sikri. The Taj Mahal is the pinnacle of architectural grandeur, surpassed only by the remnants of the magnificent city, including the Imperial Palace Complex, the huge mosque, and the exquisitely constructed marble tomb of the famous Sufi saint, Sheikh Salim Chisti.Any visitor can be transported to the era of gold tapestries, luxurious carpets, draperies, and Mughal court nobility with just a vivid imagination.

After my visit to Fatehpur Sikri, I headed to view Akabar's tomb. Situated on the outskirts of Agra lies the Tomb of the great Mughal Emperor Akbar. As his last resting place, the emperor had his tomb monument built while he was still living. His son Jehangir completed the entire project, which is entirely made of white marble and sandstone. Situated in the Sikandra neighborhood of Agra, the monument spans 119 acres and is encircled by exquisite gardens that were created by the esteemed Emperor Akbar. Regarding his own tomb, Akbar observed the Tartary custom of supervising one's own burial while still alive. While he was still living, Emperor Akbar chose the location of his ultimate burial place, planned the layout of the surrounding gardens, and oversaw the building of his own tomb. Akbar lived through the construction of the complete tomb, but his son, Emperor Jehangir, covered it with a marble stone floor. As a result, he finished building his father the Emperor's tomb.
