Desmond Doss was born in 1919 in Virginia, USA. He grew up in a poor but deeply religious family and became a Seventh-day Adventist, which shaped his beliefs strongly. From a young age, he believed one commandment above all: “Thou shalt not kill.” Because of this, he decided he would never carry a weapon.

When World War II began, Doss still felt it was his duty to serve his country. He joined the U.S. Army—but as a combat medic, not a soldier who fights. This decision made his life extremely difficult. Many fellow soldiers and officers mocked him, insulted him, and even tried to have him removed from the army. They called him a coward and believed he would be useless in battle.

Despite the abuse, Doss never gave up. He refused to touch a gun, even during training, but he worked harder than everyone else to become an excellent medic.

The Battle of Okinawa – Hacksaw Ridge

In 1945, during the Battle of Okinawa, Doss’s unit was sent to attack a steep cliff called Hacksaw Ridge. The fighting there was brutal. When the American troops were forced to retreat, many wounded soldiers were left behind at the top of the ridge.

Desmond Doss stayed.

Alone. Unarmed. Under enemy fire.

For hours, he ran across the battlefield, treating wounded soldiers and dragging them to the edge of the cliff. One by one, he lowered them down with a rope, saving their lives. Each time he prayed:

“Lord, help me get just one more.”

He saved about 75 men that night.

Later in the battle:

He treated a wounded soldier while grenades exploded nearby

He was shot in the arm

He was hit by a grenade, breaking his leg

Even then, he refused help until other wounded men were treated first

He eventually crawled to safety using a rifle as a splint—without ever firing it.
