Introduction

When you think off gimbal or youtuber start kit what comes to you mind?

It has been more than two years since the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 released and this still remains a favourite amongst many youtubers, vloggers and anyone looking to get started in the Youtube space. I am one of those people.

Let’s have a look at whether this is still the king of gimbals.

Price
I bought this in the UK for £125 but this has now been discounted to £85 for black friday deal. If you are interested, i’ve dropped a link in my description

Build
Despite 2.5 years since the release of this product this Gimbal has aged like a fine wine
It is very portable and has a rubberised plasticky feel yet feels very sturdy and feels great in your hands. It also comes with a removable stand which can act as a stand
There is a little joystick to manually control the panning and also a zoom scroll wheel that you can switch between autofocus and manual zoom
There is a tiny screen with led lights that shows you which mode you are and the % of the batter that is left in the gimbal
I am not surprised that the models that came after this has decided to go with the same design cue
What i do like the most is the extension rod that is so helpful to get shots below the help

App

To use to its full extent you need DJI MIMO app
It comes with loads of features such as parent mode, story mode etc and also help you shoot panoramic shots, clone shots, hyperlapse
I have to be honest here, apart from testing these out on day one I have never used these features
If you are an iPhone user, you can use the native app to shoot 4k video but Android users can only shoot 4k video from the app

How good is it at actually doing what it's supposed to do?

Actually, it does the job really well. Especially on iPhone where you can film 4K using both native camera and the camera through the DJI mimo app
I love the fact that it has a quick launch and is ready to do as soon as you connect the adapter
The 3-axis stabilisation is especially when you are using the extension rod and reaching for places that would normally result in shaky video or when you are outdoors and you don't want your camera kit being wet or dropped.
There are also loads of settings on their app that walks you through how to use the app and film creative edits
The watch app allows you to remotely start recording which is amazing if you want to use the back camera

Were there any issues?

The most frustrating part of this gimbal is that it cannot connect to two devices. When you are outdoors and need to change the phone quickly, you will have to reset the BT connection every single TIME!
When using your phone with a case the phone unbalance error pops up
The extension rod has some issues, whilst its stable, it does fall down and could damage your device if you are not careful
Sometimes it alters the image of your face and you need to turn these off or else, it will change the way how you look
Also, the video shot using the app takes a lot of time to process if you are sending it via air drop. Takes me over 50 mins sometimes to just process the video via Air drop but that never happens on video that is shot directly on the native camera

Conclusion

For the type of videos I do which doesn't involve a lot of travelling and outdoor shooting this device is starting to become redundant.
In most cases, this feels like an expensive accessory for your camera
It is still a great device for someone who wants to shoot outdoors and take advantage of its features like active tracking, image stabilisation but this is not a device for everyone. I would recommend getting a cheaper device if all you do is indoor shooting
I am also not a huge fan. The phone clamp as it needs to be stored separately would be great if we can still keep it in place when you fold up the device.
Overall, I would recommend this Gimbal as a starter kit for the price that is currently being sold now at £85. DJI is a brand you can trust and it will make your life easier when you are on the road filming your passion.
