So the major difference between the Marlin 5 and Talon 3 is their drivetrain and gear range
Being mountain bikes, the range of gears available has to be broad enough to accommodate the changing terrain. Trek’s Marlin 5 comes with a 3 by 7 drivetrain, or a 21 speed gear. This means you have very low gears for climbing up steep hills and high gears for high speed.
On the other hand, the Giant Talon 3 is equipped with a 2 by 8 drivetrain or a 16 speed gear. The lower range of gears makes it easy to operate and switch between gears. You are also able to ascend up hills easily. Both bikes are also equipped with Shimano Tourney front and back derailleurs and Shimano shifters as well which are known for their high quality and durability. Overall, both gears are great for off-roading but it’s easier to reach peak speeds on the Marlin 5 due to a wider range of gears.
