Hi, have you even looked at your medical bill and wonder what is a facility fee?
A facility can be owned by a hospital system, doctors or any healthcare corporations.
This fee is a charge in addition to the doctor's fee and the medical test performed.
The fee covers the resources the facility provides, which include the space, equipment, and staffing. Sometimes it's not so obvious to know that you are in a clinic that has a facility fee, it can look just like any other doctor's office.
In general, there are two types of facilities for medical procedures and outpatient surgery. HOPD which stands for hospital outpatient department or ASC, ambulatory surgical center. The regulatory standards are different between the two types of facilities, which means they have different sets of rules to follow. HOPD is always owned by a hospital but its physical space may or may not be attached to it, ASC is always a free-standing building, it can be owned by a hospital, but it is usually owned by a corporation established by doctors.
The fees in HOPD are usually more. So for example the facility fee for an ultrasound guided biopsy is around $300 in ASC while it is around $600 in HOPD.
Just a few ore things about facility fee. You cannot pick the facility where you want to do surgery or the procedure, it is all depending on where your doctor practices and you don't necessarily pain more because there is a facility fee because if there is a facility fee, the fee for the doctor is always reduced. The higher level of facility the less the doctor gets paid for the service.
You may want to consider asking these questions: is your doctor's office building part of a facility? If you are having surgery or procedure done, what type of facility will it be, HOPD or ASC? You also want to find out if both your doctor and the facility are within your insurance network. Sometimes the doctor is within the network while the facility is not. And lastly find out if your doctor and facility co-pays will apply to your deductible.
