Cementoenamel Junction and its types

Описание к видео Cementoenamel Junction and its types

The surface of the crown is covered with enamel and the root surface is covered with cementum. These two tissues of the tooth join at the cementoenamel Junction (CEJ) also known as cervical line. There are three patterns or arrangement of tissues at the cementum–enamel junction. In type 1, the cementum overlaps the enamel for a short distance, the most predominant arrangement in 60% of sections. In type 2, where the cementum and enamel meet at a sharp joint, and it occurs in 30% of sections, and type 3, where the cementum and enamel fail to join and the root dentin between them is exposed, occurs in 10% of sections. Although one of these patterns may predominate in any individual tooth, the scanning electron microscope studies reveals that all three patterns of CEJ can be present in a single tooth.
The pattern 3 is clinically important because the root dentin exposure at the cervical margin can lead to dentin sensitivity. It has also been suggested that such morphology of CEJ may result in increased risk for root surface caries and root resorption.
