The Monument to the Dead of Kpalimé, a memorial embodying the bravery of the daughters and sons of the land of our ancestors. The War Memorial.
The War Memorial is located at the crossroads, at the entrance to the town of Kpalimé. It is formed by three large curved branches, widened at the base and almost meeting at the top.
This building represents in Kpalimé a memorial symbol in honor of all those who fought for the independence of the country or defended the integrity of the territory at a given time.
The Holy Spirit Cathedral of Kpalimé.
On April 2, 1902, the German missionaries of Steyl laid the first stone of their dwelling house, which still exists today in its modified exterior, located opposite the current cathedral.
This house will include upstairs the rooms for the missionaries and on the ground floor a large room serving as a chapel. Currently, this house is the seat of the Bishopric of Kpalimé and part of this large room retains, even today, its sacred character.
On May 1, 1913, the first stone was laid by the Apostolic Prefect Nikolaus Schönig, SVD (Societas Verbi Divini), of the first parish church of the Holy Spirit, today the cathedral of the diocese of Kpalimé.
Preparations began in 1912. The design and monitoring of the construction works of this House of God were carried out by Brother Jakobus SVD. The work suffered an abrupt and unpredictable halt when a storm brought down the tower, the construction of which reached a height of 20m. The debris also damaged part of the roof structure. Work resumes very quickly. On February 11, 1914, the tower, 40m high, was crowned with a metal cross 2m high, weighing 100 kg.
On February 24, 1914, work on the tower was completed. On December 20, 1914 (four months after the German surrender at Kamina, the former German radio station near Atakpamé), the new church was blessed by Provicar Apostolic Anton Witte, SVD, in the presence of a crowd of faithful. These contributed to the construction work with a sum of 4,000 Mark – a huge sum at that time. Many other benefactors contributed to the success of this construction. In addition, among them, Miss Budde de Paderborn who offered the statues of the Virgin and Saint Joseph, the altar linen and that of the communion pews as well as a considerable sum of money.
Father Johann Surrey, SVD, gave his homily in Ewe. There were also beautiful songs and a beautiful musical accompaniment; all this despite the state of war that extended over the world. In the afternoon of the same day, we proceeded to the blessing of the Stations of the Cross.
The exterior of the church, except the painting, remained unchanged. The original stained glass windows are those that stand in the choir, behind the altar as well as the two rosettes above the main door. The old interior decoration as well as the 14 side stained glass windows disappeared. After reconstruction work in 2002-2003, entirely financed by donors from Germany, under the initiative of Father Marian Schwark, SVD, the 14 current stained glass windows that we can admire, were made in 2004 by Togolese craftsmen under the direction of Brother Seraphim Frunk, SVD.
