It's that time of the year when you want to pinch back your herbaceous perennials to control their height and force them to bush out. This can be done with Sedum, Phlox, Asters, Helianthus, Yarrow, Penstemons, Coneflowers, and Black-Eyed Susans. Set up your plant supports now while plants are still young. Don't cut back Lilacs or Deutzia till they are finished blooming. Shear Nepeta back after first flush for a rebloom later.
