Let me talk to you a little bit about annuities. First of all, what is it?
Well, it is a form of investment that is handled through an insurance company. Annuities can either be immediate, which means the money that you have invested starts being paid back to you right away, or it can be deferred, which means the money you invested and not paid back until later. Deferred annuities are good for tax planning in some instances, because the money that is paid back to you isn't taxed until it's paid back out. Annuities are also categorized by how the money is invested, they can be fixed, which means that like a CD, you'll have a fixed rate of interest. They can be variable which means that they vary with the stock market. Or they can be something called indexed which means that they stay within a range, but they're tied into some type of index. Annuities can be a very valuable part of planning, so if you're working with your attorney or financial adviser, they're something to ask about.
