One of the most prominent among 108 temples built by Sage Parasurama, the Mridangashaileswari Temple (Sree Mridanga Saileswari Temple) is in the foothills of Purulimala in Kannur district. It is here Pazhassi Raja, known as the Lion of Kerala, valiantly fought the army of the British East India Company. Mridangashaileswari Devi, the Goddess of the temple, is also the family deity of Pazhassiraja Goddess Mridangashaileshwari here is the family deity of the Kottayam dynasty. It is here that Kottayathu Thampuran penned some of the most famous Kathakali plays, the traditional classical artform of Kerala.
