The U.S. Air Force is upgrading all 142 F-22 Raptors to command next-generation combat drones under the CCA (Collaborative Combat Aircraft) program.

Each jet will receive an $86,000 kit with a tablet interface and software, allowing pilots to control drones directly from the cockpit. Communication is likely through the secure IFDL datalink already used between Raptors.

The first prototypes — the YFQ-42A by General Atomics and YFQ-44A by Anduril — are already undergoing tests. Pilots can assign routes, targets, and even authorize autonomous engagements.

This is part of the USAF’s ambitious plan to deploy up to 1,000 autonomous strike drones to support 5th and 6th generation fighters.
