In this video, we learn about the fantail pigeon.

Quick facts:

• Lifespan: 10-20 years
• Average weight:
• Family: Columbidae

Origin:

The fantail pigeon is a unique breed of domestic pigeon. Its exact origin remains a mystery, but it is believed to originate in Asia or Europe. Likely countries of origin include India, Pakistan, China, Japan, or Spain.

Today, several variants exist, including the English fantail, The Indian fantail, and the Thai fantail. Some fantails have a feather mutation giving their tail feathers a silky, lace effect.

These are known as silky fantails. The fantail pigeon was included in Charles Darwin’s book On the Origin of Species. In it, he postulated that the breed descends from the rock pigeon.

Description:

This unusual pigeon is medium-sized with a striking fan-shaped tail for which it is named. The conspicuous tail is made up of 30 to 40 feathers as opposed to the usual 12 to 14. There are several colour variants of the fantail pigeon, including black, brown, white, silvery, yellow, and blue variants.

Behaviour and temperament:

This is a calm, trusting, and gentle-natured pigeon with a fine temperament. For these reasons, fantail pigeons are easily tameable.

Uses:

Fantail pigeons are mainly raised as ornamental show-birds, but they also make great pets.
