ARTH309G Lecture 2 The Arts of Sub-Saharan Africa
Non Western Art History

Travis Lee Clark
Utah Valley University

In this lecture we talk about African Art from the great West Africa empires to the rock-cut churches of Ethiopia. Along the way we talk about why we separate the Sahara from African Art and what we mean by Sub-Saharan African Art, why African Art is so diverse and unique. I also risk my entire British audience by calling out their horrible actions in Africa and talk about what a tragedy it is that one of the best places to look at African Art is the British Museum. Then we talk about the best named war in human history "THE WAR OF THE GOLDEN STOOL!" Good times.

Below is a link to the recommended video by Christopher Roy: Coming of Age in Burkina Faso. Trigger warning, there is a brief moment where they sacrifice a live chicken, it is brief but graphic.
