The scientists had one last theory. One final attempt to explain the impossible.

Maybe—just maybe—the particles ejected from ATLAS could turn around mid-flight and form a second jet heading AWAY from the Sun. A complete reversal of momentum.

On paper, it made sense. Particles slow down, reverse direction, create the mysterious second jet.

There was just one problem:

We've never seen this happen. Not once. Not in thousands of comets observed over centuries.

Every comet we've ever studied follows predictable particle physics. Ejecta moves away from the nucleus in ballistic trajectories. It doesn't "turn around."

But ATLAS didn't care about precedent.

The only way to know the truth? Spectroscopic analysis from Earth's most powerful telescopes—the Keck Observatory in Hawaii and the Very Large Telescope in Chile.

These instruments could measure the velocity profile of BOTH jets. Track every particle. Determine if they truly originated from opposite sides of the nucleus... or if something far stranger was happening.

The second interpretation was even more disturbing:

What if the "weaker" jet was actually launching from the SUNWARD side, but then ACCELERATING as it moved away from the Sun—gaining speed in the wrong direction?

That violates Newton's laws. Objects don't accelerate away from their launch point without propulsion.

The data came back.

Scientists went quiet.

Because what they found didn't match either theory.

The velocity profiles showed something that shouldn't exist: coordinated, symmetrical acceleration from both hemispheres.

Not random outgassing. Not particle reversal.

Coordinated thrust.

One astronomer's notes simply read: "Behavior inconsistent with known cometary activity. Recommend continued observation and classification review."

Translation: We don't know what this is.
