MOONWALK: Fluid and rapid dance movement which, in going backwards, generates the propulsive force to leap forward, airborne -
the lunar dream of a body freed of earthly gravity.

The question of musical inheritance, of how to conjugate the past into the future is as crucial for classical music today as it was to the five composers featured on this recording. The Clarinet Sonatas by Brahms and Saint-Saëns in particular, conceived so late in the life of their creators, seem to be looking back through a prism of bittersweet nostalgia.
Music then appears to us as a kind of moonwalk, a ‘progressing backwards’, or ‘backing ahead’: a magical enchantment that bends gravity and time, forging what is yet to be born by engaging with the human experiences of ages past. It is this same ‘moonwalking’ magic that allows us, the listeners and interpreters of today, to kindle a vibrant and intimate dialogue with the voices of musicians long gone.
Below, the voices of our five composers spin an imaginary conversation of their own as they shine a light on their remarkably subjective paths - ever at the crossroads between creation and time, that “strange thing” so eerily described by Hofmannsthal in Der Rosenkavalier:

“As our lives go by, time means absolutely nothing.
And then, one fine day, we are aware of nothing else.
It is all around us and inside of us.
It trickles over our faces, it trickles over the mirror, it streams between my temples.
And it is between you and I, and still it flows on. Silent like an hourglass.”
