In May 2025, the Royal Navy had a significant presence in Edinburgh, primarily for ceremonial duties. From May 16 to May 22, over 100 sailors took part in a historic event, guarding Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse for the first time, temporarily replacing the British Army’s Royal Regiment of Scotland.

They participated in the Arrival Parade at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, welcoming Lady Elish Angiolini, the Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, during the Ceremony of the Keys.

The Royal Navy’s uniform was prominently displayed, with musical support from the Pipes and Drums of the 1st Battalion Scots Guards and The Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland. A Royal Gun Salute was fired on May 17 by the 105th Regiment Royal Artillery as part of the Lord High Commissioner’s procession.

The Navy’s ceremonial duties continued at both locations throughout the week, marking a historic moment as it was the first time they undertook this role. Warrant Officer 1 Glynn Moffat, the Royal Navy’s State Ceremonial Training Officer, highlighted the privilege of this opportunity, noting the Navy’s pride in representing itself in Edinburgh, especially following their role as the lead service at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in 2024. Brigadier Andrew Muddiman, Naval Regional Commander for Scotland and Northern Ireland, emphasized the importance of the General Assembly week and the Navy’s ceremonial support.
