MJOC Advanced Training requires all students to use their winch, so it was a good opportunity to get it dirty.

The key learning was that it was fast and easy to set up, and worked effectively.

However, if the vehicle has any traction then the winch will not be effective. But that is not a problem, unless you’re just testing it. In this case using 2WD and harsh acceleration was required to reduce traction to the point that all traction was lost, and the winch would then work.

Also, using the Rope Guides, described as optional in the instructions, seems to be critical to ensure that slack line is spooled safely onto the drums in the case where the vehicle outpaces the winch.

Bush Winch is a light weight, removable, winch with a 209kW 100% duty motor. It has two (redundant) winch lines, and is able to winch either forward or backwards as required.

Jeeps in the Second World War used hub winches, so the Bush Winch is a natural extension for the modern Wrangler’s capabilities.
