Atrial fibrillation is a common heart condition and I'll explain it to you in less than a minute. It is bascially where the upper chambers of the heart (called the atria) beat irregularly and out of coordination with the lower chambers (called the ventricles). This can cause a fast, fluttering heartbeat, often described as a quivering feeling in the chest. Other symptoms might include fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, or feeling lightheaded.

Diagnosing AFib typically involves a doctor reviewing your symptoms and medical history, followed by a physical examination. An electrocardiogram (or ECG) is the most common tool used to confirm the diagnosis by recording the electrical activity of the heart.

Treatment for AFib aims to control the heart rate, prevent blood clots, and reduce stroke risk. This might mean you doctor prescribes medications, such as blood thinners and heart rate controllers, and sometimes procedures like cardioversion (which is basically electric shock therapy for the heart) or ablation (which is the medial term for destroying areas of the heart causing irregular beats) can be done to restore normal heart rhythm. Lifestyle changes, like reducing caffeine and alcohol, can also help manage symptoms.
