Microsoft just beat the competition with their brand new 3D scan app.

From the presentation we can see that the app can scan virtually any real object and create a 3D object in what seems almost real time rendering and without any real technical hassle.

If this new app can scan 3D objects in a 360 degree radius and export it in a workable format for let's say 3D printers. Then this just might be the break through in 3D that the Google Tango project has jet not been able to deliver to the mass market. Also imagine what this technological approach can mean for Augmented Reality.

If you would be able to use realtime 3D scanning on a consumer phone with AR it becomes possible to create 'on the go' true immersive Augmented experiences beyond what Slam technology currently delivers.

The great thing is that Microsoft does not intend to keep this app exclusively on their own phones but they envision availability on all platforms.
