May 8th Orchard Tour Part 1

Описание к видео May 8th Orchard Tour Part 1

The first part of an orchard tour of my garden and orchard taken on March 8th. This particular part of the tour featured my Orient / Acres Home multi variety pear tree, a seedling plum, my Robusto and Mariana plums and my LeConte Pear. I discuss the idea of idea of saving and planting foods from the fruit we eat. One thing that I did not make clear but need to here. While the fruit from a seedling from a plum bought from a grocery store would not be true to the original variety, chances are it's pollen parent would also be a commercial variety. It's not likely to bear as good of fruit as the parents, but the fruit would probably be pretty good because it would get good genes from both parents. There is always that one in 30 chance that it will be as good or better than the parents. The biggest challenge from such a seedling is that it would not likely have the genes present to handle a marginal climate such as our hot and humid one in SE Georgia.
