March of the Three Kings ("Farandole, from L'arlesienne Suite, no 2")

In 1872, Georges Bizet composed incidental music to Alphonse Daudet’s play L’arlésienne. Though most of the musical excerpts were short, a handful of the more developed tunes captured the folk-like quality of melodies from the south of France. Bizet later expanded and arranged the tunes into two suites which have since become very popular concert favorites. In the second L’arlésienne Suite, Bizet included a “Farandole”—a traditional community dance from Provence. This movement combines two old southern-French folk tunes that Bizet had found in an 1864 publication, the 13th-century “Marcho dei rei” (“March of the Kings”), which celebrates the journey of the Magi, and the “Danse dei Chivau-frus” (“Dance of the Dashing Horses”). In this new version, Mack Wilberg has added choral parts to Bizet’s “Farandole,” with lyrics based on the original “March of the Kings” carol. The “Dance of the Dashing Horses” retains its place as an agile orchestral interlude between the choral strophes.
