This video explores the most disturbing and terrifying experiments ever carried out on patients inside asylums. From misguided science to outright cruelty, these procedures were once considered legitimate treatments for mental illness—and many left lasting scars.

It begins with Rotational Therapy, where patients were strapped into a chair and spun rapidly to induce dizziness, vomiting, and unconsciousness—believed to “reset” the mind. Moral Therapy followed a gentler philosophy, focusing on compassion and routine, though it often masked institutional control rather than healing.

Hydrotherapy involved forcibly immersing patients in cold or hot water for extended periods, either in tubs or wet sheet wraps, intended to calm or stimulate them, but often resulted in trauma. Solitary Confinement was used excessively, isolating individuals for days or weeks, leading to extreme psychological distress.

The Tranquilizing Chair, designed by early reformers, restricted nearly all movement and cut off stimulation in an effort to quiet madness—but instead caused panic, numbness, and even injury. Restraint Cages confined patients like animals under the belief that it prevented harm, while actually increasing suffering and neglect.

Bloodletting, rooted in the ancient belief of balancing bodily humors, drained patients of blood as a cure for mental agitation. Fever Therapy deliberately induced high fevers using malaria-infected blood or chemicals, hoping to burn out psychosis—often at great risk to the patient’s life.

Insulin Shock Therapy pushed patients into daily comas with large doses of insulin, claiming to relieve symptoms of schizophrenia, though it frequently caused brain damage. Electroconvulsive Therapy, originally delivered without anesthesia or muscle relaxants, sent powerful electrical currents through the brain, causing violent seizures.

The final procedures are among the most brutal: Trephination, an ancient practice, involved drilling holes into the skull to release “evil spirits” or pressure, and Lobotomies, which severed neural connections in the brain’s frontal lobes to control behavior, often left patients docile, disabled, or worse.

These treatments, once seen as breakthroughs, now serve as a grim reminder of how misunderstood—and mistreated—mental illness was throughout history.
