Federigo Fiorillo was born in Germany, despite the Italian name from his Neapolitan father, and travelled widely throughout Europe as a violinist, violist and mandolin player. He performed in the Paris Concerts Spirituel and also ventured to London playing viola in a quartet with Salomon (of Haydn London symphony fame). Although his Etude-Caprices have not had the exposure of Kreutzer and Rode, they represent a valuable source of violin teaching material of the late 18th century.

For this recording I played off an early edition of the Fiorillo etudes. The edition has fewer prescriptive articulation and bowing markings compared to the 20th century editions often edited by famous teachers. I felt this gave me more freedom towards the end musical result. This etude explores the messa di voce (shown by the triangles).
