Construction has begun on Danjiang Bridge, the world's longest, single-mast, asymmetric cable-stayed bridge.

According to Zaha Hadid Architects, Taiwan's 920-meter long Danjiang bridge will span the mouth of the Tamsui river that flows through Taipei.

The bridge will be supported by a slender 200-meter tall concrete mast, which is positioned so that it does not obstruct the waterway, or the scenic views. The single-mast design also minimizes disruption to the riverbed and local habitat.

The new crossing will reduce congestion on local roads as it links two major highways on opposite sides of the river. It is also set to improve connectivity with the Port of Taipei and Taoyuan International Airport.

Dedicated road, cycle and pedestrian lanes will be built on the bridge. Also included are plans to accommodate the future expansion of the Danhai Light Rail network.

The Danjiang bridge construction project has a budget of $405.2 million. It will be constructed in 68 months and expected to open by 2024.
