The watches never played a large role in the movies until Roger Moore’s appearance in Live and Let Die in 1973. This is where we see Q give Bond a Submariner 5513 with a couple extra gadgets. For the next 20 years, Bond switches watches as frequently as his Bond girls.

In 1995, we saw Bond wearing a quartz OMEGA Seamaster with a blue dial in Goldeneye. Since then, we’ve seen OMEGA in every single film for the last 9. It was a decision made by costume designer Lindy Hemming who was given the opportunity to rethink a modern Bond.

Hemming stated one of the concerns with giving 007 another Rolex partly came down to the brand image. By the late 1900s, Rolex was marketed to a different demographic - “city boys” was her phrasing in a New York Times article.

The blue dial on the Seamaster was selected because Hemming believed it accurately matched what a Commander in the Royal Navy would wear. OMEGA also heavily started marketing that their brand was used in the Royal Navy, making the Seamaster Diver 300M one of the most iconic watches on Bond’s wrist.

So that’s why today, James Bond 007 wears OMEGA watches instead of Rolex watches like in the original novels and movies.
