If you stroll along tropical or subtropical beaches at low tide, you might notice intricate patterns of tiny sand balls scattered across the shore. These curious formations are the work of the sand-bubbler crab—a small crustacean with a fascinating feeding habit.

As the tide recedes, the sand-bubbler crab emerges from its burrow in search of food. It grabs mouthfuls of sand and filters them through specialised mouthparts, extracting tiny organic particles and microscopic creatures. Once the nourishing bits are consumed, the now-clean sand is rolled into neat little balls and tossed aside.

Over the course of a meal, these discarded sand pellets accumulate, marking the areas the crab has already “investigated.” This behaviour not only helps the crab efficiently cover new ground in its search for food but also results in beautifully patterned carpets of sand balls radiating from the crab’s burrow.

Next time you spot these delicate mosaics on a sandy beach, you’ll know they are more than random: they are the creative calling cards of the diligent sand-bubbler crab, a tiny artist busy at work in the intertidal zone.
