Описание к видео Ron Sterling MD Interviewed by Stan Emert, Feb. 2014 About Sterling's Book "Adult ADD Factbook."

Stan Emert of Rainmakers TV, an established independent video journalist in Seattle, interviews Ron Sterling M.D. This is the first interview in February 2014. A second interview took place in July 2014

This interview is focused on Dr. Sterling's 2011 book "Adult ADD Factbook - The Truth About Adult ADD Updated November 2011." Since then, he has issued an updated edition of the book which went to print after the second interview in 2014.

This interview focused on some of the major conclusions made by Dr. Sterling from his extensive four-year review of more than 25,000 pages of primary literature before he began writing. As he dived deeper into the literature, he discovered that the scientific community had a set of data that was not getting into the public domain, even several years after some of that data was clearly replicated and not disputed. He didn't actually want to write a book on ADHD. When he started the literature review process, his intent was to try to find an answer to the question "Does our culture (mainstream styles, values, desires, behaviors) fit the criteria for the diagnosis of ADHD? And, if so, why?"

His discoveries in the literature have led him to view the ADD brain as a particular brain that has the downside of suboptimal dopamine for working memory capacity and functions, but the very important upside of optimal dopamine for threat responsiveness. This concept can be difficult to get your head around because, automatically, we usually conclude that a "deficiency" in something means there is no upside. Similarly, the term "disorder" implies "there is no upside."

Dr. Sterling uses the phrase "ADD is the best brain for the jungle, but not such a great brain for civilization whose emphasis is on academics, self-regulation, organization, and follow-through." Then he says, "The non-ADD brain has both a significant downside and upside that is different from those ADD characteristics. And, the literature shows it to be the best brain for optimal working memory, but it does poorly in threat response scenarios."

Since those two quite different brains both have significant downsides for certain important human activities and needs, Dr. Sterling asks the question "Shouldn't they both be disorders, then?" His conclusions that are well developed and have not been discounted to date (2020), are neither one of them should be classified as a disorder. And, that yes, the entire Western Hemisphere population shows a significant vulnerability to the effects of suboptimal dopamine for working memory.
