In the Roman army, the *balteus*—the belt worn by legionaries—was far more than a simple strap. It held the soldier’s tunic in place and kept his sword within easy reach, fixed at his side. In many cases, if a soldier was punished or disgraced, he could be ordered to remove the belt, symbolically “suspending” his legionary status. Taking off the belt was a public humiliation, showing that the warrior was no longer on duty or had lost the honor tied to his role.
