Welcome to the first video in our series about the arms in the backswing. Today, we're going to simplify the process of getting your arms into the correct position at the top of the backswing. Many golfers have no clue about the exact position of their arms at this crucial point. They’re often bent over, swinging without checking, and even when photographed, it’s hard to understand. So, let's dive into a quick and effective drill to give you a clearer picture.
First, grab your golf club and get into your stance. Swing to the top of your backswing and stop. Stand up straight, look forward, and check your arms. What do you see? Are your arms bent? Are your elbows out of place? When I first tried this exercise, I was surprised at how poorly my arms were positioned. My lead arm was bent, and my elbow was sticking out. Many golfers experience the same issue without realizing it.
A common misconception is that you swing your arms during the backswing. Swinging the arms means your body remains still while your arms move. However, when you place both hands on the club, your shoulders and body engage, creating a triangular structure with your arms and the club. This setup is quite rigid, contrary to the feeling of swinging your arms around your body.
This triangle is a stable unit, and you can’t simply swing your arms around. The movement is more about folding one elbow or the other, rather than a wide, sweeping motion. Let’s break this down further. Take your club and create that triangle, then start swinging back and forth slowly, rotating your body. Keep your arms completely relaxed, relying on your core for movement. When you reach the top of your turn and stop, notice the position of your arms. Your lead arm should be straight, wrist flat, the club parallel to the ground, and your trail arm slightly off your chest. This natural position, achieved with relaxed arms, is ideal for the backswing.
To cement this understanding, we'll go through a series of drills that reinforce this movement. These drills will help you reach the correct backswing position without overthinking it. The complexity often arises because we try to figure out the top of the backswing from an angled, bent-over stance. By removing these angles and standing straight, the movement becomes clearer and easier to replicate.
Imagine performing the golf swing without all the confusing angles. By practicing with a straight posture, you can learn the essential movements and then translate them to your regular stance. This method strips away the confusion and highlights the simplicity of the correct arm positioning.
The drills I'll show you are designed to make this process automatic. With practice, you'll no longer worry about your arm position at the top of the backswing. It will become second nature, freeing you to focus on other aspects of your game.
One effective drill involves standing straight with your club, forming the triangle, and practicing the backswing motion while observing the natural folding of your arms. This drill helps you internalize the movement and understand how your body naturally positions your arms.
Another drill is to practice the backswing in slow motion, focusing on the relaxation of your arms and the role of your body’s rotation. By doing this slowly and methodically, you build muscle memory and confidence in the correct positioning.
