윤 선생의 제자는 자신의 자화상을 그려 스승에게 보여주었다. 그러나 윤 선생은 작품을 단번에 퇴짜 놓으며 다시 그려 오라고 말했다. 제자는 스승의 지시를 따라 다시 그림을 그려 왔지만, 이번에도 거절을 당했다. 끓어오르는 화를 억누른 채 세 번째 자화상을 내밀었으나 또다시 퇴짜를 받자, 결국 다른 학원으로 옮기겠다는 뜻을 밝혔다. 이에 윤 선생은 “미술은 험난한 길이니 더 열심히 해야 한다”고 다그쳤다. 하지만 제자는 담담하게 “저는 취미로 하는 건데요”라고 답했다. 그 말을 들은 윤 선생은 깊은 한숨을 내쉬며 다시금 침울해졌다.

Yoon’s student drew a self-portrait and showed it to his teacher. However, Yoon immediately rejected the work and told him to draw it again. The student followed the instruction and brought another drawing, but it was rejected once more. Suppressing his rising anger, he presented a third self-portrait, yet was rejected again. Finally, he declared his intention to move to another academy. Yoon scolded him, saying, “Art is a harsh path, so you must work harder.” The student calmly replied, “I’m only doing this as a hobby.” Hearing that, Yoon sighed deeply and sank into gloom again.

Yun Duseo (1668–1715) was a representative literati painter of the late Joseon period. A great-grandson of poet Yun Seondo, he devoted himself more to scholarship and art than to officialdom, mastering poetry, calligraphy, and painting. He became widely known for his realistic depictions and his powerful self-portrait, designated as National Treasure No. 240, which reveals the human inner spirit through an unadorned face, tightly closed lips, and deep gaze. He also left works such as Portrait of Sim Deuk-gyeong, White Horse under Willow, Woman Gathering Greens, and Old Man Weaving Straw Sandals, and participated in the creation of pictorial maps like Dongguk Yeoji Jido, reflecting interests in geomancy and geography. His art greatly influenced the establishment of realism in late Joseon painting, and together with Jeong Seon and Sim Sa-jeong, he was regarded as one of the “Three Masters,” holding an important place in Korean art history.
