In episode three of my ten day trek across the beautiful country of Italy, we explored the ancient city of Pompeii, finding the incredible architecture of a once thriving Roman city, and finding what remains. Next, we hiked up the still active volcano that destroyed the city below, the looming Mount Vesuvius.

Pompeii is an ancient Roman city situated on the Bay of Naples, southeast of the present-day city of Naples, Italy. With over 20,000 habitants, the city was one of the richest and advanced cities in the Roman Empire. Disaster struck in 79AD, when the nearby Mount Vesuvius shocked the city, and erupted furiously for days on end. Many perrished as the pyrocrastic flow covered the city and its people for two millenia.

The ancient city is now a thriving tourist destination, and the most visited archeological site in the world. Join me in this week's adventure, as we explore the city ruins and adventure up the dangerous active volcano!
