To safeguard New Melones Lake from invasive mussel infestations, the Bureau of Reclamation has partnered with Mussel Dogs, which employ canines specially trained to detect quagga and zebra mussels, as well as their larvae. This enables early detection before launch, protecting our water systems and way of life.

Invasive mussels pose a significant risk to our lakes, rivers, and water infrastructure. Dreissena polymorpha (zebra mussel) and Dreissena rostriformis “bugensis” (quagga mussel) can rapidly infest aquatic systems, leading to costly, irreversible damage.

Invasive mussels often live in obscurity around watercraft, making it important to always clean, drain, and dry your vessel when leaving any body of water. Invasive mussels spread by attaching to watercraft and trailers that have launched into infested waters. A single mussel can produce upwards of one million eggs per year. These eggs hatch into free-flowing microscopic larvae known as veligers.
