Описание к видео Yvonne Rogers: Can HCI change the world? (Sanders Series Lecture)

There is a growing concern in the field of HCI about making an impact by addressing pressing societal issues. Topics that are being proposed are far-reaching, including climate change; health and well being; facilitating innovation in developing countries and instrumenting new forms of civic engagement with the aim of influencing policy change. Such big questions, however, need the HCI community, along with others, to change how research is done. This requires new framings, new collaborations and new integrated methods. However, this is simpler said than done: the gap is huge between working and achieving success at the micro level of HCI and at the scale required of macro HCI (Shneiderman, 2016). Furthermore, as we move our focus from small to large can we call what we are doing research anymore? Are we becoming more philanthropic and less academic? Does this matter? In my talk I will describe some of our attempts to bridge the gap as part of our Intel funded collaborative research institute (ICRI cities) where, with an assortment of others, we are exploring the impact of urban tech on community empowerment.

About Prof. Rogers
From 2006-2011, Yvonne was professor of HCI in the Computing Department at the Open University, where she set up the Pervasive Interaction Lab. From 2003-2006, she was a professor in Informatics at Indiana University. Prior to this, she spent 11 years at the former School of Cognitive and Computing Sciences at Sussex University. She has spent sabbaticals at Stanford, Apple, Queensland University, University of Cape Town, University of Melbourne, QUT and UC San Diego.

Yvonne was one of the principal investigators on the UK Equator Project (2000-2007) where she pioneered ubiquitous learning. She has published widely, beginning with her PhD work on graphical interfaces to her recent work on public visualisations and behavioural change. She is one of the authors of the definitive textbook on Interaction Design and HCI (4th edition just out), that has sold over 150,000 copies worldwide and has been translated into 6 languages. She is a Fellow of the British Computer Society and the ACM's CHI Academy: "an honorary group of individuals who have made substantial contributions to the field of human-computer interaction. These are the principal leaders of the field, whose efforts have shaped the disciplines and/or industry, and led the research and/or innovation in human-computer interaction."
