PRUNING CLIMBING ROSES / REJUVENATING OLD CLIMBERS

Описание к видео PRUNING CLIMBING ROSES / REJUVENATING OLD CLIMBERS

This week we take a look at how to prune climbing roses, in particular ones over rose arches where obtaining a horizontal branch formation is not always possible or desirable. Also I am working in my neighbour's garden on a large 12 foot x 12 foot pergola with a rose on each supporting pillar that hasn't been pruned properly since they were first planted over 15 years ago. In this case, normal yearly maintenance pruning is not an option since some of the branches are so huge that they are bending the structure and others are no longer productive and need to be rejuvenated. So I go about removing first the DDDs and then older canes, wayward canes and non productive canes. This pergola has 2 meek climbing roses and 2 beasts. If you have a very vigorous climber you need to keep on top of it before it takes over the show. With these types you have to be quite aggressive pruning in order to re-establish balance.
