Many autistic adults (and often children) prefer communication that is direct, clear, and honest. Indirect or ambiguous messages can be confusing, as interpreting social cues or “reading between the lines” may be challenging. Being straightforward helps reduce frustration and miscommunication leading to misunderstandings.

It’s important to remember that communication challenges go both ways. Neurotypical individuals may also misunderstand autistic communication styles. Neither style is wrong or lesser—just different, and sometimes incompatible.
