Corps of Engineers Fish Biologist Kelly Baerwaldt, with the assistance of Fish Biologist Matt Shanks, explains the process of ultrasonic telemetry, while implanting an individually coded ultrasonic transmitter into a fish, Oct. 6, 2011. The purpose of the telemetry effort is to determine the movement of fish in the immediate vicinity of the Electric Fish Barriers, designed to prevent the inter-basin transfer of fish between the Mississippi River and Great Lakes basins, in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal (CSSC), using stationary receivers and mobile tracking devices. Since October of 2010, upwards of 200 fish have been tagged with a detection rate of 82 percent or nearly 2.7 million detections, and no tagged fish have crossed any of the electric barriers in the upstream direction. The Corps will continue to work with other agencies in the Asian Carp Regional Coordinating Committee to aggressively monitor the CSSC to determine the location and abundance of Asian carp in the area, using traditional and non-traditional methods.
