3400 years ago, an infectious disease began to spread in Egypt.
When Egyptian mummies were studied, some of them showed such marks all over their bodies.
It was also discovered that if this disease infected 100 people, about 30 of them would die within two weeks.
This disease was smallpox, for which the world's first vaccine was created in 1796.
It was developed by Dr.Edward Jenner.
He analyzed the cowpox virus and found that this virus creates the same antibodies in humans that are produced when smallpox occurs.
But people feared that the vaccine made from the cowpox virus would turn them into cows.
This superstition was dispelled by mass testing of the first vaccine, and then in 1959, the WHO launched the smallpox eradication campaign, which succeeded in 1979.
And smallpox became the world's first disease to be completely eradicated, and this mark is from that very vaccine.
