Here is a home movie dating to 1937. It was shot by an unknown amateur filmmaker. The film offers a glimpse at the life of an American family in this era, and features a young family with two young girls. It starts with a toddler’s ruddy pink cheeks under an easter egg white hat opens scene (:10); pink tulips sing up behind. A cocker spaniel licks at fuzzy toddler feet (:14). She blinks and kicks picks at grass on the mat (:24). Mother arrives in a long jacket; stark burgundy contrasts against light tones of the baby’s suit (:42). The dog noses into the shot (:54) for a belly rub and everyone grins (1:11). Father slouches against the home's wooden siding (1:55), throws a tobacco butt (1:55) and grips a club for croquet. He swings the club and the toddler stretches for the knobby ball (2:36). Two women huddle over the toddler (2:59) with croquet ball still captive. The view runs inside (3:43). Long shots watch as the girl pulls all the clothes out (3:43). Wobbly knees in a pink wobbly dress, she plays with a box in the doorway (4:06). Close shots capture a cherub face (4:29). Outside; she’s in a pink jacket carting a stuffed dolly (4:36). She reappears in a green hunting jacket (5:01). The view runs over surrounding landscape (5:43), colonial style homes (6:01), yellow, pink and red flower blossoms blanketing the yard (6:02). Signs note the magnolias (6:39). Family members pass out of the front door (6:53), the young girls wear flat newsboy cabbie hats and winter jackets. Two girls stand shoulder to shoulder in white gloves and button down jackets (7:48). Red plaids are revealed underneath winter jackets (8:02). Shots pass over spring yellow tulips (8:44) in the backyard guarded by trees and shrubs. Thick green vines consume the back fence littered with pastel blossoms (9:03). Two girls appear in easter spring wear; light linens and pastel pink dresses dotted with floral prints (9:17). Sun baked yard scenes follow, girls sprint in dirt with white stockings and covered toe white shoes (9:39). They play summer games around a silver pole (9:59). The mother stands stoic amid green leaf foliage in a short sleeve summer dress (10:05), the dog jumps up behind and little girl in pink brings up the rear. Affection passes between the woman and two girls as the black dog yips for treats. Her arm slung around a yellow dressed waist (10:28). Shots swing in closer towards porcelain faces and white bows on the bangs (10:56). Grandmother picks through the vegetable garden as the mother sits plopped in wood chair in the foreground (11:13). The gray haired grandmother grips a ripened tomato (12:10). Closing shots pass over the screened in porch and light wooden furniture (12:23).
