Big myth! Little reality. The main relationship that undocumented workers have with Social Security is subsidization. They are legally required to pay in to Social Security but legally barred from getting benefits. It's a tailwind for the program's finances. Later, if they get citizenship, their contributions made while unauthorized do not count.

There are two edge cases for getting benefits. The first: someone was an authorized worker, a DOCUMENTED immigrant who paid into the program and it was all above board, but by the time they started receiving benefits, they were undocumented. So, their visa expired, or their green card status was denied. They rightfully earned them, but didn't leave when they were supposed to. Other edge case: they purchased a real Social Security number, obtained it fraudulently, and both paid in and collected on that number. The second care is very rare.
