"I'm in Muscat, the capital of Oman, where we're due to see talks between the Iranians and the Americans over Tehran's nuclear program. Now, these talks are coming after nationwide protests have shaken Iran's theocratic government. Iran responded with a crackdown that killed thousands and saw tens of thousands arrested by authorities there. Now, these talks and their scope remains unclear. The Iranians insist they'll only be over the nuclear program. The U.S. bombed Iran's nuclear program back in June during that 12-day war launched by Israel. The Americans say, though, that they also want to discuss Iran's ballistic missile program, as well as its support of militias in the wider Middle East. Now, these talks are really important because U.S. President Donald Trump has moved an aircraft carrier as well other warships and aircraft into the region and has threatened to militarily strike Iran if a deal can't be reached. But previous rounds of negotiations here in Oman, as well as in Italy, went nowhere - putting that much more pressure on these negotiations as the wider Middle East worries this could spiral into a new regional war."

STORYLINE:
Iran and the United States were poised Friday to hold negotiations in Oman at least over Tehran’s nuclear program.

The talks follow a chaotic week that initially saw plans for regional countries to take part in talks in Turkey.

Previous rounds of meetings did not deliver following Israel’s launch of a 12-day war against Iran in June last year.

The U.S. bombed Iranian nuclear sites during that war.

Meanwhile, nationwide protests have shaken Iran's theocracy.

It responded with a crackdown that killed thousands and reportedly saw tens of thousands arrested.

U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to strike the country in the time since, spurring the talks.
