When building a cloud, the focus is usually on cost and throughput metrics (MB/s, IOPS). The result is often underwhelming. When an application is moved to the new cloud it ends up costing more and being slower. In this talk, we'll show how storage latency drives application performance for all applications. We'll contrast the typical "throughput" benchmarking with "latency" benchmarking and we'll explain the relevance of latency benchmarking when it comes to user-visible application performance metrics such as time to load a web page.
We'll show application performance measurements from public clouds and from a StorPool-power production cloud.
