Visit to meet father Salvador Gomes Coutinho at #BethBethlehem, Karwar. An eye-opener trip.

13th April myself Vivek Mendonsa and JOSEPH Mathews started at 8 am for Karwar to meet father Salvador GOMES Coutinho. The place called Beth Bethlehem in Karwar is 120 km from Panjim. V reached in 2.5 hrs. Lovely ride. Good roads. Great ambiance. On reaching the place v saw a road touch 10-acre property for Beth Bethlehem, very immaturely done.

My first trip to GOA was in 1987. To father Salvador house in the village called Chandor. I had stayed there for ten days. An awesome trip then. In his huge huge ancestral house. I met him today after 26 years. The meeting was very very emotional. V both were touched

#FrSalvador was always a very different man. Nothing's changed. He is different today also. A different way of thinking, courageous man. Constructive in nature. After his last posting as a parish priest in Colaba, he was hell-bent on working for the destitute. Sick people living on the streets.

He wanted to start a healing house for such people. And was scouting for a large piece of land. He finalized 10 acres at Karwar. The bishop was very welcoming and encouraging which made him select Karwar. It was barren land. Bought for 55 lakhs from donations from people whom he had g helped and blessed in the past.

In seven years he has developed the place to amazing levels. One will b shocked to c the work done. All on the property is developed by this single man. He says mass every day at 7 am and works in the fields from 3 to 7 pm. Every single day.

He has built a huge institution that treats the street people. He picks them from the streets, informs the police and makes a legal entry, keeps them at Bethlehem and sends them back home or rehabilitates them, educates them on some skills while they stay at the home, and gets them established in the mainstream society. In doing so, he again updates the police records.

At any given point in time, the house has around 100 sick and destitute people. Undertreatment and education.

The institution he has built is a marvel in itself. Very very very neat and clean. Good rooms to stay. Clean toilets. 60% made out of scrap material and old donated furniture utensils stones etc. he refurbishes all old donated material and makes it as good as new.

People appreciate his work and donate his money and used material. His confidence in God is fantastic. He just thinks and work happens. He is known all over the world as the priest who heals. He is now building a good-sized hospital for the local people and the people staying in the house.

The whole house is self-dependent. Every food they eat is grown in the land. They also have chickens, fish, rabbits, etc on the land for personal consumptions. They sell flowers, fruits, and vegetables grown on the land, and the revenue generated is used for running the home.

My Learning:-

1. Determination, courage, and confidence can change and challenge anything. Father Salvador is a living example.

2. One man can change the world. His actions can change the thoughts of many like me.

3. Nothing can deter a man with a mission.

4. Where there is a will, one makes his own way.

5. Fm the riches of Colaba to the shambles of a place in Karwar, is a reverse journey. also can motivate a man to create what others dread to think.

6. Living with sick people with a smile on the face and the zeal to mend their body and lives, is a feat which many may discuss but none would like to live. Such situations really teach that yes there is nothing like the word impossible.

My appeal to u is.

1. Whatever old material u can share like furniture, bedsheets, utensils, electronics, games, etc can be donated to this institution. They might be of no use to u but will bring joy and happiness to many unfortunately challenged people of this world.

2. Encourage people like father Salvador on the marvelous work that he is doing by writing to him and appreciating his efforts.

3. Visit this place whenever u can in your lifetime. It will move your emotions to a different level.

4. Pray for father Salvador and his people in the home.

This is what I will do.

1. Spread information about this institution to the whole world. To as many people as I know.

2. Donate money on a regular basis. Whatever little I can.

3. Donate as much material as possible from my end.

4. Collect material from friends and transport them to the home.

5. Will also pray for the home and the father who is doing what God expects every human to do. #Agnelorajesh
