Online scams, such as romance and fake investment scams, are on the rise, with annual losses reaching billions of dollars. Far from the old "Nigerian princes," modern scammers use sophisticated technology (such as deepfakes and voice cloning) and advanced social engineering techniques to manipulate their victims.
A study by the American Journal of Criminal Justice analyzed descriptions from victims and found that scammers exploit human psychology and principles of persuasion:
Reciprocity: They initiate an exchange of favors (such as sending flowers) to create a sense of obligation and trust, fostering an "emotional debt."
Creation of Crisis: They claim urgent financial emergencies, instrumentalizing social norms to exploit the victim's willingness to help in times of need.
Appeal to Sympathy and Authority: They become sympathetic to reduce reluctance to help and use fake documents with logos and seals to support their claims, exploiting social conditioning to obedience. These complex strategies cause victims, even in the face of inconsistencies, to rationalize or justify the relationship.
To avoid becoming a victim, it is crucial to pay attention to warning signs: if someone you have just met online tries to quickly switch communication to private channels, makes premature declarations of love, or asks for financial help during crises. It is advisable to verify information through reverse image searches and check credentials.
