Leroy Gonsalves: I live a life less ordinary.

Leroy: My name is Leroy Gonsalves, and I’ve studied at ACU for around nine years. My PhD was looking at the importance of saltmarsh mosquitoes to small insectivorous bats, just to see whether spraying mosquitoes to reduce their numbers would impact upon the bats.
Currently I work at ACU as a sessional lecturer in environmental science, and I also work for the New South Wales department of primary industries doing research in the forest science centre, looking at how things like logging impacts upon, pretty much wildlife in our state forests, and also how we can better manage state forests to protect wildlife.
The work I do now, it’s a great mix of interacting with young people who are interested in science and the environment, and then the other side of it is doing research. You’re out in the field, you get to see some wonderful places where most people don’t get to see. You see some wonderful wildlife. It’s just a great job that I’m in at the moment.
The main driver of the passion that I have for the job that I do is just … I’m always interested in finding out more - like there is so much that we don’t know. It’s just, you are always learning something new every day. So I think that’s pretty much the main thing that keeps me going.
