Exercise One - Functional Practice
Set up: 5v5 (With keeper)

Description:
Ball starts with keeper either as a goal kick or in players hands. One attacker and 4 midfielders defend. Midfield must start behind the goals to show the team playing out of the back an initial low line of pressure to indicate time to play out of the back.

Coaching Points:
4 P's of defense (Pressure, Position, Patience and Power)
Pressure - Run straight at defender or how to angle run to
force a player into one direction
Position - The correct body position to attempt to win the
ball back
Patience - Don't lunge in pick a good moment to win the
ball (visual cue of attacker taking a bigger touch)
Power - When to attempt to win the ball and how to be
strong and safe in the tackle
Wide area - Outside player presses, AM covers, DM pushes in and left stays for balance.
Central area - Wide players tuck in and AM presses with DM stepping forward to deny space.


Exercise Two - Phase of Play

Set up: 6v6 (With keeper)

Description:
Ball starts with keeper either as a goal kick or in players hands. One striker and now 5 midfielders defend. A midfield for both teams have been added. A holding mid for the attacking team to work in relationship with the previous midfielder to create central space. A midfield for the defending team to operate as cover for the other 2 central midfielders. Midfield can now dictate the line of pressure but the attacking team Red can now also play long. Work with defending team blue on how to close space, deny forward penetration while being compact and how to open up when possession is won.
