Luminous Landscapes of John Frederick Kensett – Contentment island, CT
(Program 110 from the Emmy award winning PBS series Landscapes Through Time with David Dunlop).
In this program David Dunlop visits the beautiful coast of Contentment Island in Connecticut, the home of American painter John Frederick Kensett (1816-1872). We will visit where Kensett lived and painted after the end of the Civil War and where he sought to reveal and capture the serene quality of light and weather in his paintings. Kensett's paintings were more interested in creating the subtle and tranquil effects of daylight, especially at dawn and dusk, than in the graphic representation of a specific place or landscape. This program will outline the evolution of Kensett from a Hudson River Artist-Explorer to an American Luminist. Examining a painting created by Kensett of the same location, David will explore the techniques for evoking a suffused unified light, the American appetite for tranquility in art after the Civil War, and the enduring legacy of the Luminists on the world of landscape painting. At the end of the Program, David discusses different aspects of a painting painted by fellow artist Kathy Draper, who has given permission for David to actually paint on her painting.
